STI CTG Mission
The broad, public health goals of the research program are:
- prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- prevention of infertility
- prevention of adverse outcomes of pregnancy
- prevention of reproductive tract neoplasia
- prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection
- prevention of other chronic STI sequelae
The scientific agendas of the STI CTG are:
- Diagnostics
- Therapeutics
- Vaccines
- Topical Microbicides
- Barrier & Prevention Methods
What types of research will be funded?
Diseases or pathogens of interest will include, but are not limited to:
- chlamydial infection
- gonorrhea
- syphilis
- chancroid
- genital warts (human papillomavirus)
- genital herpes (herpes simplex virus 1 & 2 infections)
- human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection as it is associated with other STIs (both in terms of increased transmission rates of HIV and alteration of the natural history of STIs).
The syndromes of interest include, but are not limited to:
- pelvic inflammatory disease (and sequelae - infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain)
- adverse outcomes of pregnancy.
